Pointing with lime mortar ~ Part 3 = Technique

Lime Pointing Tips Here's my take on how to go about pointing with a lime based mortar - others may have differing guidelines - this is very much my take. This post is this third in the series. In the first instalment, I covered the tools of the (pointing) trade. The second instalment was about lime mortar and how to go about making it. Now in part three I'll address - pointing technique... Technique Firstly the old mortar joints will need cleaning out. If the old mortar is really rotten or dirty then a pressure washer can be used initially…

Ventilation slits – detail

On the forum, farmer lydia asked about ventilation / arrow slits: From Barn Conversion 2011 My partner thought the windows would go on the inside, with a wooden frame to match the rest of the windows but I like the idea of glazing them on the outside and having a deep window ledge. So I promised some more detail... As you can see in the close up picture below, the glazed, thinly framed (you can see the narrow black metal framework), double-glazed window units have been 'stuck' in place with a mix of adhesives, fillers and wedges. Pretty crude, but…

Building Progress ~ January 2011

A new year and back to my old tricks of being very late with updates. In my defence I've already mentioned that I've been working on the drainage and tidying up the back of the barn though my great wall which has occupied much of my time over the month. A ton and a half of stone later and we're getting there, although I'll need to continue around the back off the barn with the tidying up. I also made a start in putting in a low retaining wall to the garden side of the path that leads from the…

Internal flue

Something I'm grateful to the planners for is the internal flue from the stove. If I'd had an option, without thinking, I'd probably have placed it outside running up the wall externally and in doing so lost an awful lot of heat. Instead, as required by the planners (my plans didn't show where the flue ran and I was 'informed' that a reapplication for an external flue was likely to be rejected) it runs internally and keeps the bedroom (more of a store room at the moment) that it passes through lovely and warm with heat we'd otherwise have lost.…

Energy Performance Certificate – EPC

The Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) is a piece of certification that has come along since I've started this project and is now a compulsory piece of paper required by building control as a part of the completion process. The requirement for an EPC came into effect from the 6th of April 2008, with the implementation of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive 2002. Why do I need one? From October 2008 EPCs will be required whenever a building is built, sold or rented out. So what is an EPC? The EPC is part of a series of measures being introduced…

Installing Freesat – Starter for 10

Given the problems I'd had with the signal from the TV aerial I thought I'd look into satellite TV. There was no way I was going to pay and any escape from the clutches of Sky seemed to be liberating. With the promise of more HD channels than Freeview, Freesat looked to be the way to go. (As it transpired, the problems I was having with the digital signal from the roof mounted TV aerial (the signal dropped intermittently and TV screen went blank momentarily) were more to do with the TV I was using than the signal and the…

The Great Wall

Between the earth bank on which most of the garden sits and the barn lies a narrow strip of earth, perhaps 6 feet wide. The path runs just over half way along this wall and the strip of earth beyond that has been left pretty much untouched except for a small concrete plinth laid to tidy-up the foot of the walls. Just before the path ends there used to be a concrete machinery stand that was removed leaving an untidy area where the ground levels change. There was also a piece of perforated pipe that feeds into the land drain…

A walk in the woods…

TRF and I went for a walk in the woods on Sunday. It's been a while since I've been there, except to dump ashes from the fire. From Barn Conversion 2011 TRF told me that the brambles have been placed there by dragons - must be to keep us away... There is plenty of growth in the hedgerow that needs to be removed to allow light in and for me to start to replenish my dwindling stock of firewood. That gives me a job to look forward to at the weekend, if I can get my chainsaw started. A job…
